Mark Martin, The Greatest Never
Nascar Racing driver, Mark Martin is perhaps one of he most interesting figures in the racing world. Described in many occasions by ESPN as the best driver to never win a championship he is one of the greatest ever, with the misfortune that the championship has eluded him during his career.
Mark started his career in Arkansas, in the dirt tracks. He wasn't having much luck on that front, he then moved on to the asphalt races and joined ASA racing series. He then enjoyed a lot success winning twenty two races and four championships. These victories earned him the attention of NASCAR and he raced on several occasions in the major circuit but, even though showing much promise and potential, he was unable to get a position in one of the racing teams.
In 87 that changed, entering NASCAR with Roush Racing that started a 19 years of racing. During that time he was sponsored by Valvoline and. Martin, has 40 career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series wins. He has come in second place in the point standings 5 times. He came the closest to winning the championship in 1990. He was penalized for using an illegal carburetor spacer (it wasn't a performance enhancer), but it still caused him a 46-point penalty that caused him the tittle at the end.
At the age of 52 he I still an active driver. It was announced that Martin would replace David Reutimann in the for MWR in 2012, a deal lasting through 2013. It is schedule that he will drive at least 25 races in both seasons. Hopefully, the elusive championship will come for Mark on either of the two seasons. Hopefully then he will be able to drop the moniker "the greatest never".
